If you’re even THINKING about drinking and driving over the holiday weekend – forget about it! Beginning August 19, 2010, a statewide drunk driving enforcement effort kicks off with more than 200 law enforcement agencies in 30 counties participating.
Drunken drivers beware. Police plan to step up patrols beginning Thursday as part of “Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest.” campaign, a drunken-driving crackdown that goes through Labor Day.
Penalities for even a first offense drunk driving in Michigan can be quite stiff, and include up to 93 days in jail, up to a $500 fine, up to 360 hours of community service, six points on a driver’s license and up to 180 days’ license suspension. In addition, convicted drunk drivers will be subject to a $1,000 fee for two consecutive years, for a total of $2,000 in additional costs. Anyone who refuses a breath test the first time is given an automatic one-year driver’s license suspension.
It should be noted that Michigan is NOT participating in the national effort.
